Capital Steps
October 1,
8 pm
There
is no better time to be hosting The Capitol Steps than
election time, unless you happen to be Barrack Obama
or John McCain. Come and enjoy an evening with The
Capitol Steps lampooning the very people and places
that once employed them. Members of Congress make good
targets and there is no politician safe - from their
clever political satire and song parodies to the tongue
in cheek barbs hurled at every political affiliation.
Listen for new classic musical parodies like, “But
We Only Have McCain”, to the tune from the Wizard
of Oz and “Obama meets Osama. The group contains
moderates as well as extremists on both sides, but
their first mission is comedy. They do a wonderful
job casting levity on the serious endeavor of running
this country. $40

Tuck
and Patti
with Opening act: Judith Owen
October 4,
8 pm
Tuck
Andress is a world-class guitarist, but he's also imbued
with the rare gift of good taste. His musical partner
and wife, Patti Cathcart, is an uncommonly soulful
and inventive jazz stylist and among the best scat singers
since Ella Fitzgerald. Together they create musical
magic, that's deceptively simple on the surface but reveals
layers of subtle complexity as Tuck's subdued yet intricate
guitar work carefully molds around her lush and nimble
voice, giving the duo an intimate and easy-to-listen-to
feel. With the unbridled energy of Tina Turner, and
the emotive passion of Mahalia Jackson, she drives, pitches,
and croons with a deeply anchored resonance that immediately
pervades her listeners. The result is an intimate musical
conversation of which Patti says, "We want people
to leave feeling like something has happened," They
need nothing more than a guitar, a voice, and an audience
to enjoy their blissful parity. They offer their lighthearted,
eclectic take on folk, pop and jazz standards, including
a charmingly playful version of the Beatles' "Honey
Pie," a medley of Jimi Hendrix's "Castles Made
of Sand" and "Little Wing," Cyndi Lauper’s
ballad "Time After Time" and Al Green’s “Let’s
Stay Together” as well as their own intimate
and lively originals.

The Quarrymen
October 17,
8 pm
John Lennon and his band, The Quarrymen (Eric Griffiths,
Pete Shotten, Rod Davis, Len Garry, and Colin Hanton)
first played in Liverpool at St. Peter's Church, in 1957.
That was the time and place of the first meeting between
Paul McCartney and Lennon, and the place where Lennon
asked McCartney to join the band. A few months later,
George Harrison joined the group. They changed the bands
name to The Silver Beatles then eventually to, The Beatles.
The rest as they say is history.
The five original members of The Quarrymen are on a worldwide
reunion tour, reintroducing McCartney and Lennon’s original skiffle music to the world. The Quarrymen's
laid-back, relaxed, natural style set them apart even then. The sound is a highly
animated variant on American folk and country music and was an introduction for
most English teens to rock & roll in the 50’s. In concert, the roots
of the early Beatles music is unmistakable as well as the influence of iconic
performers of the 50’s including Elvis, and the Del-Viking’s. You’re
likely to hear the first ever harmonies penned and performed by McCartney, along
with stories of Lennon’s arguments to infuse rock and roll into their skiffle sound. The Quarrymen's concert is a piece of that musical landscape that was
the birth of the greatest band in popular music history, and a window into the
beat that changed the world. $25

Maria
Muldaur
October 18– 8 pm
Those
who remember Muldaur for her '70s pop hit `Midnight At
The Oasis' will be surprised by the soulful intensity
she still delivers. Still around and is still receiving
excellent reviews from every major music critic in the
country, Muldaur’s voice and
performance will transport you to a small intimate club
on another side of town. Her musical roots run deep,
from bluegrass, folk, jazz, blues and gospel, yet her
newest album, “Yes We Can!” released in July
of this year, features covers of Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye,
Allen Toussaint, Earl King and Garth Brooks. Indeed part
of the thrill of a Muldaur concert is her choice of material.
Her voice sounds as fresh and honest as ever, performing
with a smoldering, passionate quality on everything from
jazz to sultry after-hours pieces. There are only a few
rare vocalists who hit the peak of success, remain there
for decades, and produce works that lasts like Muldaur’s.
Perfect pitch, excellent phrasing, and deep interpretive
powers have made her one of the finest vocalists of her
era.$25

The
Derek Trucks
Band
October 22,
8 pm
There are guitarists of the
highest order who can shred a spine-tingling solo or
rip through gritty power rock chords—and then there’s Derek Trucks.
What sets Trucks apart from his six-string brethren isn’t just his child
prodigy roots or laundry list of rock royalty acquaintances. It’s his humility
and dedication to his craft. His skills as a guitarist and commitment to grooves
that rock and move belie his age, as Trucks splashes his slide guitar over styles
that range from straight-up blues to percussion-laden Latin styles. Watching
Trucks play is a lesson in minimalism—there’s no duck-walking or
hair-rock posing for audience adulation. Rarely does Trucks ever move, save for
his fingers as they dance across the strings of his guitar. For all his humility,
Trucks stature continues to rise. For lovers of guitar instrumentation you can’t
watch anybody better, and if you’re in the mood for a bona fide rock and
roll experience, you must make this show. Just s how up and let the bandcook.
Outstanding. $50

The
Persuasions
Ocotober 25,
8 pm
The Persuasions are one
of the longest lasting, most prolific a cappella groups
ever. Since their early days, they've gone on to inspire
hundreds of imitators, recorded with many award-winning
artists, been featured in movie soundtracks, and much
more. While generally referred to as a "doo-wop" group,
they're just as comfortable in contemporary, gospel,
Christmas or children’s music! The Persuasions
were formed in Brooklyn in 1961 as a group of five
20-something guys, (Jerry Lawson, Jimmy Hayes, Joe
Russell, Jayotis Washington, and Toubo Rhodes) who
sang on the street corner after work. They tried to
hire a band, but when the guitar player didn't show
up they decided to sing it a cappella and never looked
back. A happy mystery in popular music for the past
40 years, The Persuasions have defied every popular
musical convention on their way to near cult status.
They apply their trademark sound to country, blues,
pop, rock, and classic soul music with equal aplomb,
taking any song, making it their own and creating an
entirely new musical experience. The Persuasions career
is proof that making good music is a process of continually
finding and re-finding sound.
