Executive Director Position Summary

  • The Avalon Foundation’s Executive Director is responsible for articulating a vision for the organization that ensures its continued growth and development to provide community events and unique cultural and educational opportunities for the community.
  • S/he works to drive the development process by cultivating relationships with private donors, applying for and keeping up with all reporting requirements associated with grants and state funding and oversees the budgeting and financial reporting process.
  • The Executive Director works closely with the Avalon Board of Directors and various committees to ensure that strategic and financial goals are being satisfied.
  • S/he is the “face” of the Avalon Foundation. The Executive Director is present at all meetings with individuals from State and Local Governments and networks socially to promote the interests of the Avalon Foundation.
  • S/he meets on a regular basis with the Avalon Theatre’s House Manager to discuss and approve programming decisions.
  • S/he is present at many of the Avalon Theatre performances and many Easton Main Street events to connect with the community and to troubleshoot logistical issues as they arise.
  • The Executive Director is a check signer and has the ability to enter into various contracts on behalf of the organization.

Accountabilities:

  • Provides the vision to transform the Avalon to its greater potential, as well as the strategy and organizational structure to implement it,
  • Establishes long-range objectives and monitors performance of staff by developing a metrics program to ensure successful benchmarks are reached,
  • Manages the operations of the Avalon including hiring, training, and mentoring an effective community organization,
  • Develops and oversees comprehensive data management and technology applications for development, ticketing and marketing,
  • Translates, packages, and articulates the vision, mission, and history of the Avalon to current and potential donors,
  • Fosters and develops relationships and outreach and works cooperatively with local government, business, volunteers, and the community,
  • Identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards major gifts,
  • Nurtures a culture of professionalism and accountability within the organization,

PERSONAL QUALITIES
The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A proven record of successful management of a community cultural organization, theater, or similar entity,
  • A presence and communication style that commands the respect of the Avalon; its community, constituents and performers,
  • An ability to assess long standing practices and policies, and to initiate new ones, allowing the Avalon to operate effectively and efficiently as possible in a goal-oriented environment.
  • A passion to accomplish ambitious and high-volume tasks, characterized by a professional and agile approach,
    Direct fund raising experience with individuals, corporations and foundations,
  • The proven capacity to make difficult decisions, communicate their rationale, and implement them effectively,
  • A commitment to ongoing development and mentoring of members of the organization as well as the external constituents, volunteers and community
  • The ability to balance the internal and external demands of the position;
  • A track record of partnering with community groups,
  • A successful record of cultivating, obtaining and stewarding significant donors,

The nonprofit Avalon Foundation of Easton MD is seeking an Executive Director to oversee its programs in the performing arts, visual arts, public access TV, and Main Street community promotions. The qualified candidate will possess successful leadership and organizational experience. The candidate will have human relations skills and experience working with local government officials, volunteers and other constituents. A proven track record in fund raising, effective written and verbal communication skills, a record of successful community outreach, coupled with a background in data management and technology for development, and marketing required. Applicants must have the ability and desire to take the organization to the next level, a Bachelor’s degree or higher and a minimum of 5 years of executive level management experience. EOE.
